About this tool
GZIP is the compression used for web traffic, log rotation and .tar.gz archives. It compresses one file at a time; to bundle several files, use Create ZIP. Auto mode decompresses files ending in .gz and compresses everything else. Decompressing a .tar.gz gives you the .tar archive.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between GZIP and ZIP?
Both use the Deflate algorithm. ZIP holds many files with a directory; GZIP wraps a single file and is standard on Linux and the web.
Can I open .tar.gz files?
Decompressing gives you the .tar file. Extracting files from a tar is not supported yet.
How much will my file shrink?
Text, JSON, CSV and logs typically shrink 70–90%. Images and videos barely change.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. ConvertBrightly processes files with JavaScript inside your browser. Nothing is sent over the network, and the files disappear when you close the tab. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads.
